A Celebration of the Music of Judy Garland
RELEASE DATE: 22 OCTOBER 2007
First Night Records is proud to announce the long
awaited and much anticipated UK release of Lorna
Luft’s debut CD – Lorna Luft: Songs My Mother Taught
Me on 22 October 2007.
Produced by Barry Manilow and Colin R. Freeman,
Lorna Luft: Songs My Mother Taught Me celebrates the
music of Ms. Luft's mother, “the world’s greatest
entertainer,” Miss Judy Garland and features songs
from such Hollywood classics as The Wizard of Oz,
Meet Me in St. Louis, Easter Parade, A Star is Born
and more.
In support of the CD release, Ms. Luft will
undertake her first UK concert tour in over 10
years. Songs My Mother Taught Me: Live in
Concert will play 15 venues commencing 26 January
2008 through 14 February 2008.
Lorna Luft: Songs My Mother Taught Me,
produced by Colin R. Freeman and Ms. Luft’s long
time friend, entertainment icon Barry Manilow, is an
electrifying celebration of the legend, the music
and the memories of Ms. Luft's mother Judy Garland.
This affectionate tribute, based on Ms. Luft’s
acclaimed live concert, features riveting
interpretations of her mother’s most memorable songs
including the signature tunes "Rock-A-Bye Your Baby
(With a Dixie Melody)," "Chicago," "The Man That Got
Away” and "Come Rain or Come Shine." Amongst the
CD’s many highlights is a passionate duet medley in
which mother and daughter join voices on “I Can’t
Give You Anything But Love” and “Through the Years."
Lorna Luft: Songs My Mother Taught Me also
features Judy Garland’s live performance of “Lorna;”
a song written by Johnny Mercer for Ms. Luft’s
childhood appearance on The Judy Garland Show.
The First Night Records studio recording of Lorna
Luft: Songs My Mother Taught Me features 11
tracks with over 38 memorable songs including “Born
in a Trunk,” Ms. Luft’s musical journey through her
mother’s life, incorporating music from Miss
Garland’s legendary motion pictures including The
Wizard of Oz, Meet Me in St. Louis, Summer Stock,
Easter Parade, A Star is Born and her legendary
1961 concert at New York’s famed Carnegie Hall.
The CD also features two bonus tracks; a newly
recorded version of Miss Garland’s Carnegie Hall
Overture and Ms. Luft’s showstopping rendition of
“Hello Bluebird,” a song featured in her mother’s
final film I Could Go On Singing.
A critically acclaimed audience favorite in the US,
the live concert of Songs My Mother Taught Me,
which the Los Angeles Times called “heart-stopping
and thrilling… an incandescent revelation not to be
missed,” completed an 8 week season in London’s West
End at the Savoy Theatre in 2004 and played Ireland
in 2005. In support of the CD release, Ms.
Luft will undertake her first UK concert tour in
over 10 years with Songs My Mother Taught Me:
Live in Concert. She will play 15 venues
commencing 26 January 2008. |

SONGS MY MOTHER TAUGHT
ME: LIVE IN CONCERT
For decades
my dear friend Barry Manilow has been urging me to
create a musical tribute to my mom. "You HAVE
to do this" he'd tell me, "It's your great
mission in life to continue her legacy."
Well, for a long time that legacy was just too
overwhelming, just too personal for me, her daughter.
But a few
years ago
I had reached a point in my life where I did become
a little more comfortable with the comparisons and the
legacy. I felt I had come full circle and might be
able to undertake the challenge of celebrating her
legacy; so
I called Barry to tell him I thought I was finally
ready to attempt it. He was ecstatic! He said
there were only two people to write this show; Ken and Mitzie Welch. He's worked with them for years and
trusted that they could find the right framework to
celebrate my mom. When I first spoke with the Welch's,
they said if I just wanted to sing a bunch of her songs
– they weren’t interested. However, if I wanted to take
the audience on a musical journey of my mom’s life as it
relates to me – then they’d be very interested. So
thus began the creation of the most personal, most
important show I've ever been part of.
The whole
context of the show is music but it's also about
memories. People will experience an extra sense of
nostalgia for the music and they'll be enriched by the love
because there's an amazing amount of love on stage and
in the audience.
In
the show, we laugh, we cry, we sing, we joke and we
celebrate the joy that was and still is my mom and her music. That's all we
do for two hours.
I know I'm doing the
right thing.
We want people to have a good time and be entertained -
that's my job.
-- Lorna
